The weight of the final decision
On the isolation of senior roles, and why the people who hold the most are offered the least.

The loneliest seat
There is a structural truth about senior roles that is rarely said plainly: the more responsibility you hold, the fewer people you can think out loud with. Doubts shared downwards become instability. Doubts shared sideways become politics. Doubts shared at home become a weight on someone you love. So the most consequential thinking, about direction, people, risk, succession, gets done alone, often at night, by the person with the least access to honest reflection.
What this costs
Research on organisational life is clear that psychological safety, the sense that one can speak honestly without penalty, is foundational to good thinking; Amy Edmondson’s work at Harvard established how much performance depends on it. The irony of seniority is that the people responsible for creating that safety for others frequently have nowhere to experience it themselves. The results are predictable: decision quality degrades under unexamined pressure, composure in public is paid for privately, and identity fuses with the role until stepping back feels like disappearing.
What the work looks like
Executive and founder work at this practice is a confidential thinking space with clinical depth behind it. Some of it looks like strategy: thinking through a decision with someone outside the consequence structure. Some of it looks like therapy: understanding why certain pressures land the way they do, and resolving what drives the patterns that follow you from role to role. Most engagements move between the two, because the executive and the person are not separable, and pretending otherwise is where much of the trouble starts.
Questions worth sitting with
Where do you currently do your most honest thinking, and who hears it? What decision are you deferring because there is no safe place to examine it? If your role ended tomorrow, what of you would remain, and how confident are you in the answer?
If this speaks to where you are, you can read about how I work on the Executive and Founder work page.
